The Baby Guide to Adulting: Life Lessons from Babies

"Must be nice," we've all said it at some point, commenting on the carefree lifestyle of babies (and even our pets), who have no responsibilities and are cared for immensely. Am I the only one who would love "baby treatment" again? Adulting is exhausting at times and sometimes we need a refresher on key life lessons. A few weeks ago, I was talking to my daddy, who gets the exact same response whenever he asks how the baby is doing. That's when I jokingly mentioned I should write a blog about life lessons we can learn from babies. And here we are!

  1. Joy Comes In The Morning

As soon as Autumn opens her eyes in the morning, girlfriend is smiling - happy! It’s like she’s so excited and grateful to start the day (not even knowing how it’ll go). My baby already has great faith, OKAY!

Lesson:

Wake up and smile! Thank God that He blessed you with another day, because He didn't have to! Gratitude is truly the best attitude.

  1. Sleep is Essential

One thing Autumn doesn’t miss is her sleep! My innocent 5-year-old niece coined her as “nappy head” because she’s always taking naps. She’s the only person who can call my baby "nappy head" without getting clocked, ok! (lol).

Lesson:

As adults, sometimes sleep is the last thing on our to-do list with work, errands, and responsibilities. The truth is, without sleep, our bodies cannot function properly - even if we’ve convinced ourselves otherwise. Don’t assist the devil in cutting your life short, GO TO SLEEP!

  1. Comfort Zones are Okay

In my short time as a new mom, I’d agree with the notion that babies don’t cry for no reason. Autumn mainly cries when she’s uncomfortable. She thrives where she is comfortable.

Lesson:

We often hear that discomfort leads to growth, but who says we can’t thrive in comfortable spaces? Autumn is too big for her bassinet, and forcing her to stay would literally be dangerous when she would be much safer and more comfortable in a crib. It’s okay to seek spaces that make you feel safe and secure.

  1. Eat When You're Hungry

Babies understand the importance of nourishing their bodies! Have you seen a hungry breastfed baby? They don’t play about missing meals!

Lesson:

In the age of fad diets and body goals to "un-big our backs".... y'all please eat! Skipping meals is like skipping oil changes on your car. Skip enough and your car just might break down, so can our bodies without food. (I'm working on this too, don't feel attacked, lol).

  1. Use Your Voice to be Heard

Babies get loud the more you try to ignore them when they cry. They use their voice to communicate their needs.

Lesson:

In just 4 short months, Autumn has reintroduced me to the importance of speaking up. No one will hear you if you aren’t making any noise. Use your voice to be heard - whether it’s at work, in a relationship, in prayer - your words have power!

Which Life Lesson are you going to work on this week?

  • #1. Morning Joy

  • #2. Sleep

  • #3. Choose Comfort

  • #4. Eat

Well, look at that - babies reminding us how to simplify life! How cute was this blog? I had fun writing it and hope you enjoyed reading! I would love to hear what life lessons babies have taught you or reminded you of.
